Professor Dr. Md. Mahmud Sazzad is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET), Bangladesh, and currently serves as the Director of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), RUET. He has been associated with RUET throughout his academic and professional career and has made significant contributions to teaching, research, academic administration, quality assurance, accreditation, and institutional development.

Professor Sazzad received his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from RUET, and subsequently obtained his M.Eng. and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Saitama University, Japan. He received the Gold Medal Award for Outstanding Academic Performance for his undergraduate studies. He was also awarded the ADB-JSP Scholarship for his master's studies and the MEXT Scholarship for his doctoral studies in Japan.

He began his academic career at RUET as a Lecturer and subsequently served as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering. Throughout his career, he has undertaken a number of important academic and administrative responsibilities, including serving as Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, Head of the Department of Urban & Regional Planning, Chairman of the Self-Assessment Committee of IQAC, and Assistant Provost. He is also a member of the Academic Council of RUET and has been actively involved in various undergraduate and postgraduate academic, accreditation, and quality assurance committees.

His primary research expertise lies in geotechnical engineering and computational mechanics, with particular emphasis on the Discrete Element Method (DEM), Finite Element Method (FEM), granular materials, soil mechanics, slope stability, foundation engineering, seepage analysis, and numerical modelling of geotechnical systems. His research has focused particularly on understanding the macro- and micro-mechanical behaviour of granular materials and applying advanced computational techniques to complex geotechnical engineering problems.

Professor Sazzad has an established record of scholarly research, with journal articles and conference papers published in recognized national and international outlets, including publications with ASCE, Elsevier, and Springer. His research encompasses granular materials, DEM, cyclic and triaxial loading, plane-strain compression, slope stability, seepage through earth dams, liquefaction potential, and other related areas of geotechnical engineering.

He has also made significant contributions to academic quality assurance, accreditation, and scholarly publishing. He currently serves as an Editor of the Journal of Engineering and Applied Science (JEAS), RUET, and previously served as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Advanced Structures and Geotechnical Engineering. He has also served as a reviewer for numerous international journals and conferences.

As Director of IQAC, RUET, Professor Sazzad provides leadership in advancing a sustainable culture of quality, continuous improvement, academic excellence, accountability, and evidence-based institutional development. His responsibilities encompass strengthening institutional quality assurance mechanisms, facilitating academic accreditation and assessment processes, promoting effective stakeholder engagement, supporting evidence-based decision-making, and fostering continuous improvement in academic and administrative practices. Through these efforts, he is committed to strengthening institutional capacity, enhancing the quality and relevance of academic programmes, promoting good governance and accountability, and supporting RUET’s pursuit of academic excellence and national and international recognition.
